Dr Werner Schnappauf is a new member in the German Council for Sustainable Development (Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung, "RNE"). The partner of the law firm GvW Graf von Westphalen received the corresponding letter of appointment from Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday.
The responsibilities of the 15 person council include implementation of the German sustainability strategy, designating specific fields of action and projects and making the issue of sustainability an important matter for the public. The RNE is developing the German Sustainability Code with which companies can make their involvement in sustainability transparent. The Council is also providing important input for sustained involvement in various statements e.g. concerning the global sustainability, climate policy and raw materials.
In his previous offices as the Bavarian State Minister for Environment, Health, Consumer Protection and as the chief executive officer of the National Association of German Industry (Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie, "BDI"), Dr Schnappauf had also focused on strengthening and further developing German sustainability policy. As a partner in the energy practice group at GvW, he is also contributing here, including as a member in the Commission on Financing of the Nuclear Energy Exit (Kommission zur Finanzierung des Kernenergieausstiegs, "KFK") which recently again made an important contribution to the turnaround in energy policy with the recent proposal for a reorganization of the disposal of nuclear technology.
