The German air navigation service provider DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) continues to expand its sales and consulting business for air navigation services. In January 2016, DFS opened a new office in Singapore, followed by a regional office in Beijing in late December.
Besides its core business of providing air navigation services in Germany, DFS has offered consulting and training services for more than 20 years and in addition has been selling its air traffic management systems around the globe. The sales and consulting business makes a valuable contribution to the development of DFS.
Beyond Europe, the key regions for the commercial business of DFS are Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. Air transport in these regions is experiencing above-average growth making it necessary for numerous countries to modernise the structures of their air navigation services. DFS is able to share its expertise in all aspects of modern air traffic control.
GvW has been mandated to support DFS regarding both steps into the Asian markets.
Düsseldorf partner Helmut Kempf (Corporate/M&A) had already advised DFS during the successful tender process for the take-over of air traffic control and engineering services at London-Gatwick airport, this marking the largest change of provider in the industry of air navigation services. After also supporting DFS in opening its representative office in Singapore, he now headed a GvW-team from several offices which also handles the delegation of the new DFS-representative to Beijing.

DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, the German air navigation service provider, is a State-owned company under private law with 5,550 employees as at 31 December 2016. DFS ensures the safe and punctual flow of air traffic over Germany. Around 2,000 air traffic controllers guide up to 10,000 flights in German airspace every day, about three million movements every year. This makes Germany the country with the highest traffic volume in Europe. The company operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich as well as control towers at 16 international airports in Germany. DFS also pursues commercial activities in addition to its core business. Its subsidiary, DFS Aviation Services GmbH, markets and sells products and services related to air navigation services as well as providing air traffic control at eight regional airports in Germany and at London Gatwick Airport in the UK.
GvW Graf von Westphalen advised the transmission system operator 50Hertz on the award of a major contract for the North Sea Connector 2 offshore grid connection project. The project involves the planning, construction, installation and commissioning of a converter system comprising an offshore converter platform in the North Sea and an onshore converter station in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The North Sea Connector 2 project is intended to connect offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the German electricity grid in future.
