With Amprion commissioning Hitachi Energy to manufacture four converter stations for the ‘Corridor B’ HVDC project, wind energy will be transported from the North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony to the Ruhr area, supplying around four million people with electricity. The ‘Corridor B’ bundling project consists of two new underground cable connections, each with two converter stations.
"The four converter stations will enable a total of four gigawatts of electricity to be transmitted from Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony to the Ruhr area via the two new underground cable connections. If necessary, the transmission capacity can be expanded by a further four gigawatts using the additional empty conduits that have been laid," explains GvW partner Dr Thomas Senff, who led the negotiations with Hitachi on behalf of GvW. ‘I am particularly pleased about the excellent cooperation with Amprion's legal department,’ emphasises Dr Senff, who heads the Construction and Plant Engineering practice group at GvW.
Dr Sebastian Rohrer also contributed his many years of experience and expertise in offshore and onshore climate change projects on behalf of GvW. ‘We are delighted to have been able to provide Amprion with legal support and assistance in all important contracts for the major Corridor B project,’ emphasises Rohrer. ‘This is an important step towards the energy transition in Germany.’ Dr Sebastian Rohrer and Dr Thomas Senff had previously negotiated the cable contracts (more). GvW Graf von Westphalen advised the transmission system operator 50Hertz on the award of a major contract for the North Sea Connector 2 offshore grid connection project. The project involves the planning, construction, installation and commissioning of a converter system comprising an offshore converter platform in the North Sea and an onshore converter station in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The North Sea Connector 2 project is intended to connect offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the German electricity grid in future.
