Turkey: The data pro­tection board ex­tends dead­line for regis­tration with data con­trollers' registry again

The Data Protection Board (Board) has recently resolved to extend the deadline for registration with the Data Controllers’ Registry Information System (“VERBIS”). The decision no. 2019/387 on the extension was announced on the board’s website on 27 December 2019.
The Extensions for the VERBIS registration deadline are as follows:

Data Controller Last date for registration

Real person and legal entity data controllers who employ more than 50 employees annually or achieved a total yearly actives on the balance sheet of 25 million Turkish Liras

 30.06.2020

Real person or legal entity data controllers residing abroad

 30.06.2020

Real/legal person data controller which has (i) less than 50 employees annually and (ii) less than 25 million Turkish Liras annual financial balance and of which the main area of activity is processing of sensitive personal data

 30.09.2020

Public institution and organization data controllers

 31.12.2020


The obligation to register with the registry is one of the fundamental obligations of the data controllers under the Personal Data Protection Law, and non-compliance with this obligation may lead to administrative fines up to TRY 1,000,000.
