German commercial law firm in Vietnam: GvW opens office in Ho Chi Minh City
The law firm GvW Graf von Westphalen is opening another office in Asia: In addition to its office in Shanghai, the law firm will have its own office in Vietnam from January 2024. Stefan Ewers, who was responsible for Rödl & Partner's Vietnam office for eight years, joined GvW as an equity partner in October 2023 and will head the new GvW office in Ho Chi Minh City.
"Vietnam is a highly attractive business location in Asia with above-average growth," explain Christof Kleinmann and Dr Robert Theissen, both Managing Partners at GvW. "Many of our clients are now pursuing the 'China Plus 1 strategy' in order to further diversify their trade and supply chains. Vietnam, with its geopolitical location and investment-friendly conditions, is virtually predestined to open up a further foothold in the Asian region."
Patrick Heid, head of the China practice at GvW, is also pleased: "China remains a key trading partner and sales market for German companies. However, diversification is an important risk management measure - as the current geopolitical developments have once again made clear to us. We are therefore delighted to have Stefan Ewers on board, who will support our clients in their market entry and business activities in Vietnam with his many years of practical experience".
As a German lawyer, Stefan Ewers has been advising companies on investment law in Southeast Asia for more than 15 years. Besides working in Thailand and Indonesia, he expanded the presence of Rödl & Partner in Vietnam up to 65 employees in two offices. When he joins GvW, Mr. Ewers will be supported by a team of experienced lawyers and tax advisors who have many years of experience in advising international, in particular German-speaking investors. In addition to legal and tax advice, GvW will also offer accounting services in Vietnam with a team of internationally experienced accountants and will thus be able to fully support investors with projects in Vietnam as part of a one-stop-shop approach.
"My team and I are very pleased to join one of the leading German commercial law firms in this unprecedentedly interesting country for investors. Vietnam's above-average regional growth over the past ten years, coupled with the manifold investment subsidies, will continue to define Vietnam as one of the most attractive investment locations in the coming years," explains Stefan Ewers, the future head of the GvW office in Vietnam.
GvW is one of the few German law firms with its own office in Shanghai. Our German and Chinese-speaking lawyers have been advising German companies on market entry, investments in Chinese companies and their business throughout China since 2009. With the new office in Vietnam, GvW is now occupying a further niche in the legal market in Asia, thereby strengthening its position as one of the leading law firms in German-Asian business transactions.

Transport System Bögl: new local public passenger transport system a big success in China
The Max Bögl group of companies has developed a new local public passenger transport system. The system called “Transport System Bögl” (TSB) uses magnetic levitation, or “maglev” technology and provides a clean and cost-efficient means of transport for better mobility in inner city areas. The technology is becoming increasingly popular also in other countries: Max Bögl’s most recent export order was the sale of its TSB to China. The company’s plans include building a 3.5 km test track in Chengdu and extensive marketing activities to promote the technology in China – all through a sales partnership with a Chinese company.
