GvW advises 50Hertz on the tender process for converters for offshore grid connection
GvW Graf von Westphalen advised the transmission system operator 50Hertz on the award of a major contract for the North Sea Connector 2 offshore grid connection project. The project involves the planning, construction, installation and commissioning of a converter system comprising an offshore converter platform in the North Sea and an onshore converter station in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The North Sea Connector 2 project is intended to connect offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the German electricity grid in future.
The contract for North Sea Connector 2 was awarded to a consortium comprising Siemens Energy and NEPTUN SMULDERS Offshore Renewables. Siemens Energy is responsible for the high-voltage direct current transmission technology and the key electrical components of the converter stations. NEPTUN SMULDERS Offshore Renewables is a joint venture between NEPTUN WERFT, which belongs to the MEYER WERFT Group, and the Belgian offshore construction company Smulders, a subsidiary of the Eiffage Group. Key components of the offshore platform are to be manufactured in Rostock-Warnemünde.
50Hertz operates the electricity transmission grid in eastern Germany, covering the federal states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, as well as the city-states of Berlin and Hamburg. With its workforce of more than 2,500, the company ensures the electricity supply for 18 million people in these regions and, through its projects, is playing a key role in driving forward the expansion of the grid infrastructure for the energy transition.
GvW advised 50Hertz on this contract award with a team led by Dr Sebastian Rohrer (plant construction, lead). The team also included Andrea Torka (Finance), Jörg Khöber (IP), Dr Thomas Senff and Jacqueline Dekkers (both Construction Law/Plant Engineering).
With this mandate, GvW continues to advise transmission system operators on key infrastructure projects relating to the energy transition.
